national hot dog month

July is National Hot Dog month.  You might know this if you read my webcomic.  I drew a comic about it, check it out here.  As many might also know, I really like hot dogs.  I remember the first time I actually got one that wasn't just ketchup and mustard.  I got a New York style dog with sauerkraut on it.  It was so amazing.  It was also the time I learned I liked sauerkraut which is the main ingredient to the Reuben sandwich.  SO back to the point the last couple of months I've started to make a lot of different styles of hot dogs.  Below are two I actually remembered to take pictures of.  I made Chicago style last night and totally forgot to photograph them.  I'm so forgetful.  Yet they were really tasty.  On the left we have the bacon wrapped stuffed brat.  I stuffed that little brat with onions and marble jack cheese, I'm not sure how it's different than monterey jack cheese.  The store only had marble.  They were good, but I don't suggest wrapping the bacon uncooked around the brat.  The bacon doesn't fully cook, learned that the hard way, but I was only able to make one of them pretty like that.  The second hot dog is the southwest dog or Mexican charred-corn dog.  I threw corn, onions, lime juice, and miracle whip together to make the topping on it.  Then sprinkle some feta cheese and chili powder over it.  They were amazing to eat.

Another hot dog I made this month was the Hawaiian Dog.  That had grilled pineapple and red onions (with sugar and cayenne pepper in the mix) on top of the hot dog.  Very good too.  The hot dog is an awesome food.  A food that can be made for kids or adults.  I like the adult styles that I've been making.  Hope everyone has some more hot dogs this month.

  1. Where do you get your recipes? Your hot dogs look delicious! Do you cook them on the grill, in the oven, or on the stovetop? I think you should post your recipes for people like me who want to expand my hot dog cooking skills.

    1. I got some of the recipes from Everyday Food July issue. The stuffed brats I got from Parade's Dash Recipe may magazine (this one is a free downloadable magazine.) Then you have the Chicago Dog which I picked up from eating them. I still haven't officially made one correctly though. Neon relish is a little expensive and I'm always scared of hot pepper. I'll post some recipes up later in the week. I just do ours over the stove top. It's the easiest way for me.

  3. Yummy! I love hot dogs & now I have some amazing ideas for better tasting hot dogs! A few weeks ago, we did brats and then sauteed up green peppers & onion and topped the brats with it. That was super yummy too! My friend told me about that one! Keep posting the hot dog recipes, they sound so yummy & I want to make some!
