I know I've called myself a nerd before, but at the same time I'm not really sure if I am really am a nerd. For one thing my wife is was to hot. Which might not be a true test to see if you're a nerd or not, but I believe it is one thing that might make me less nerdy than other people. I've never really had any nerd friends either, all my friends have been normal with a punk here and there. Plus I try not to fly my nerd flag in "real life." That means I don't go around telling people I read comics and make comics. I don't jump into conversations about Star Wars and Star Trek with people, even people I know. It's been this way for a long time. Since high school really. I got rid of my Magic the Gathering Cards in Jr. High. Then my junior year I transformed my look to a 90's punk rocker. I shed as much nerdiness as I could. Sure I read comics here and there, but I didn't associate with people that did that kind of thing.
Fast-forward to 2013, everywhere on the internet people are claiming to be nerds. They're throwing on glasses and seeing superhero movies. They scream that they are nerds because they've seen all the "comic" movies, which I doubt, because that means seeing all these little film too. Yet, I still feel like being a nerd is a bad thing. Sure I can tell you almost complete history of most of Marvel Comics characters. I watch reruns of Babylon 5, Star Trekn (all series), Firefly, and Battlestar Galactica. I play with Lego bricks. I even draw my own webcomics, but don't call me a nerd. Most people I met don't know about any of those things. I try to tell people about them, but no one has ever been interested in my hobbies. I always keep them quite and try to blend in with other people at work. My shyness makes that hard too. Still even though I feel like maybe nerd culture is accepted on the internet, no one in the real world has heard.
So what do you guys think? Am I nerd? Should I be proud and fly the nerd flag even if it makes me an outcast? Plus what should my nerd flag look like? And what do you think a nerd is? Allison and I don't totally agree on what a nerd is. Allison thinks she's a nerd and I don't think she is. Once again, she's just to hot to be a nerd in my mind.
Now here's the song from Adam Warrock that made me think about all these deep nerdy thoughts.

goals for 2011 are done
I don't make many new year's resolutions. I never have. I kind of always thought they were stupid. When I was a kid I thought if I made new year's resolution I could do them, but I would fail after a month or two. Never in my life have I ever completed a single new year's resolution. That was until last year. Last year I set out with the most ambitious resolution I have ever tried. I decide to draw something everyday. Kind of like a daily comic because I love comics. After 365 days I can say I did it! I kind of thought I would fail. I fail at a lot of things so I kind of figured I'd give this up after a month or two. I thought about giving up, put I didn't. I now have three full and one half filled sketch books for 2011 drawings. Now I'm not going to lie, I did miss a few days here and there, but I always went back and did them, I have 365 drawings all done in 2011. I never said they had to be done by end of day, just that I had a comic day and I have a drawing for each day. I loved doing them too. Summer was favorite time to draw them. I was really inspired by the baseball season. I drew a few baseball players from past and present. I really tried to capture their movement in my drawings. I was able to do this with some of the comics but not all of them. Another great thing that came out of my comics was my presidential or political comics. My father encouraged me to draw all the presidents after I put up a funny little comic on President's Day on my comic blog. I drew these comic with fever till October. Then in October I decide to dedicate the month to monsters. That was a really fun month of comics. Then I picked them back up in November but didn't finish. Instead I drew lost of other comics leaving the Barack Obama comic still to do. I'm glad to say I finished his comic yesterday. I still have a few more politicians to draw, but seeing as it is now a weekly comic on my comic blog I'll be looking for even more politicians here soon.

Drawing wasn't my only goal. On Goodreads they put up a challenge on their site to read books. You could enter how many books you think you could read in a year. I put down a hundred, but that's including comic books. I planned on reading fifteen regular books with eighty-five comics. I was able to succeed in this goal too. I read twenty regular books. I haven't been reading this many books since I got out of high school. I felt good about this number. I read a lot of different type of books. Allison has had that effect on me. She's got me reading tons of cool things.
All and all I think 2011 was a good year. I did the things I set out to do. Drawing a comic a day was really hard, but rewarding. It took a lot for me to come up with enough ideas to fill a full year. I don't know when I'll that again, but hopefully next year. This year I'm taking a break and going to work on more personal stories. I'm bring back my Lost Guns series. I loved drawing those comics in college and I want to get back to telling stories about my life. I plan on drawing at least one a week. Plus I got my goodreads goal for this year. Plus you can see my 365 at flickr.
Here's for another great year.

The Quarter Bin – Wolverine 170 – 172
2002 was an exciting year. X-Men the movie had just come out the summer before. Wolverine was a hot property. Plus the yellow spandex was ditched for the black leather jacket. This three story issue arch was called Stay Alive. This story was not the best Wolverine story ever, but I’ve never heard of the writer, Frank Tieri. That doesn’t mean much in the comic world. Writers come and go in the comic industry. This story is a nice little adventure in Canada. Wolverine is looking for a bad guy who messed him up in previously. Instead he stops in a diner and sees some crazy guy eat all these people on a live reality show. The guy turns out to be Mauvais, an immortal French wizard who happens to be a cannibal too. Mauvais is going all crazy to unleash a Wendigo. Wolverine has to fight Mauvais and the Wendigo in issue 171. He’s beat pretty good and then in issue 172 Alpha Flight shows up. Nothing like Canada’s premier superhero team showing up.So let’s get into what makes this story arch good.
The Good: Wolverine in black leather. I love this era. Grant Morrison run on New X-Men was one of my favorite. I love the old look now. I liked that the X-Men were all out of spandex and into leather jackets. They seemed cooler and who’s the coolest X-Men, Wolverine. The second issue in the arch is a “Nuff Said” issue. It was a challenge Marvel did with its comics for one month in 2002. No words were used in the comic, just pictures to tell the story. In issue 172 Sasquatch preforms a fast ball special. I don’t know about you, but I love seeing Wolverine doing a fastball special anytime I can get it. Also Tieri is setting up future stories with Sabertooth watching Omega Red and Lady Deathstrike. You see both of these characters for a second, but no explanation of what is going on with them. I like Omega Red and wish he was the main villain in the story. Also Wolverine has to fight some Polar Bears.
The Bad: Wolverine seems a little depowered in this arch. Mauvais seems like lame villain. He’s a French wizard. Not really that cool in my book. Wolverine has to fight and kill some polar bears. Doesn’t he know they are already in trouble with global warming? Come on Wolverine. Also the story plot from the first issue is just dropped. What ever happened to the guy who wanted to show everyone dying on TV. The TV producer never gets mentioned after he decides to air his reality show as his contestants are being eaten.
Stay Alive was an okay arch, not the best. I liked a lot of things about it, but it was lacking a real villain. French wizards just seem silly to me. Plus the fact that I spent $1.50 for it I would say it was worth it. I had fun seeing Wolverine in his leather jacket. Plus there was a fast ball special in it!

the new 52 - Static Shock
The new 52 has finished it first month. That would the total relaunch of DC comics line of comics. They rebooted their entire line in September. I stopped reading DC comics at this time too. It felt like it would be a good jumping off point since all the stories were wrapping up. I was only reading two Batman books at the time so not a big loss for me. Then this week was the first rounds of issue two for some of the comics. I also only had one comic I as picking up at the comic shop so I figured I might give one comic a shot. I was thinking about Men at War and Action Comics. I heard some good things about both. Who doesn't like a good Grant Morrison Superman story or a war comic? Well in the end I went a totally different direction. I went with Static Shock! I picked up the first two issues of this book mainly because of 00's cartoon. I didn't watch the cartoon regularly but I did like it.

After reading the first two issues, I have to give Static Shock a passing grade. It was a lot of fun to read. He held onto some of his Milestone roots. Milestone was the company that first published Static Shock comics. They have Hardware being Static mentor in superheroing, since he's still a teen. Hardware stayed back in Dakota while sending Static to New York City to investigate some crime. In the first two issues we start to see a criminal organization that Static will be fighting. He crosses their path by accident at first by stopping someone from stealing a powersuit for S.T.A.R. labs. This leads the organization to want to stop Static. They don't want any Superheroes in New York City. They are using a teenage gang of techheads to pull of most of their crimes, the Slate Gang. The organization puts a hit out on Static and all hell breaks loose, very entertaining. They use great cliff hangers at the end of each comic.
All and all Scott McDaniels does an excellent job writing Static Shock. I've always enjoyed his writing since I can remember. He did a lot of great comics in the 90's and 00's. He wrote my favorite run of Nightwing comics. I hope that he continues with his awesomeness and keep Static Shock in my read list. That's it for the new 52 for me. I plan to read more of it, but probably in trade from the public library. When I get my hands on that I'll let you know if the other new 52 is worth reading.

national comic book day
It's National Comic Book Day! I've never heard of this holiday, but I do love comics. I would have thought this day was the first Saturday in May which is Free Comic Book Day. I love that day too. Comics are the best and yes, you should be reading them if you are not.
I wanted to talk about five comics I love reading right now. I have a bunch that I love to read. Since I am one for the spandex muscle comics I'll be talking about them. I know that's not every ones cup of tea, but it's mine. I'll try and throw in some other good books too.

1. Invincible by Robert Kirkman. This is the best monthly comic book out there. Invincible follows Mark Grayson on his adventures. The twist and turns of Invincible will totally keep you reading the comic. Mark grows from a high school kid with no powers to one of the most powerful superheroes on Earth. He deals with every day situations and with the morale decisions he has to make as a superhero. Should he kill villains? Should he work for the government, even if they're a little corrupt? His decisions will effect society he lives in. I love the personal drama Mark goes through with his family life. Everything is being thrown left and right as Mark grows up.
2. The Amazing Spider-Man by Dan Slott. I'm a huge Spider-Man fan. I've loved Spider-Man for so many years, I can't count them. The most current story going on in the Amazing Spider-Man in Spider-Island. Normal people are getting spider powers. They can webswing and stick to walls. Mayor Jameson doesn't like this. The world see this as a epidemic. Can Spider-Man protect New York when he's now just like everyone else? Slott has been plotting Spider-Man for about a year now. There has been a lot of changes in the last few years and this Spider-Man is ready for action. For once most things are coming up good for Peter Parker.
3. American Vampire by Scott Snyder and Steven King. This is a new comic I've been reading from Vertigo Comics. I for one thought vampires were played out. Twilight made me feel that way. This comic has no superheroes. I'm not even sure if there's a hero in the book. The vampires in this book are evil. They suck blood and murder humans for fun. They're not about finding love and sparkling. They are about killing. One of the interesting things going on in this book is that each line of vampires has different powers and weakness. The old European vampires are the classics, the ones we all know. The American vampires are new, the story starts with following the first one, Skinner. He is a bad cowboy for the 1800's. Snyder and King both write different sections of the stories and weave the magically evilness of them. If you like good vampire stories this is an excellent one.4. Gladstone's School for World Conquerors by Mark Andrew Smith. It's the Hogwarts for super villains. That alone should say enough. If you're a super villain you send your kids to this school to learn to use their evil powers and fight superheroes. Or do they? There's an evil mystery behind the school and the super community. What is that secret? This all ages book is amazing. It will grab your attention and make you want more and more.
5. 21: The Story of Roberto Clemente by Wilfred Santiago. If you like baseball this is a great comic. It tell the true story of Roberto Clemente. How he was from Puerto Rico and made it all the way to the majors. It's a great story and I think everyone should read it.Okay there's five comics I love right now. Now you all need to get up and go find a comic you'll like to read. You can check them out from your local library if you want too. It'll make your life better. Trust me.

ragdoll
Once in a blue moon I give some crazy comic a chance and will read/buy it. Okay I'll read almost any comic I can get my hands, but buy that's a different story. I like to stick to characters that I know and love like Spider-man, Wolverine, Invincible, Batman, and other cool characters like that. Back when I had a bit of more income flow I would would dabble in collecting comics in a big way, but now it's very small. I can count on two hands all the comics I buy. So, I decide to give a comic I've heard very little about a chance about four months ago, Lil' Depressed Boy. This comic doesn't have superheroes. This comic doesn't have tights. This comic doesn't have demons or supernatural events. The character is not detective or PI. He's a ragdoll named Lil' Depressed Boy or LDB for short. In all cases he could easy have been a normal boy, but for a gimmick they made him a ragdoll instead. I think this was a clever idea. The whole world around him is normal and they treat him like he's a normal person. I think this perfect. I think we all have a little ragdoll in us. I know I relate to LDB alot. He's shy, really like music, and plays video games. Plus he's not so great with women, until he meets this cute girl at the laundry mat. Thus starts the great boy meets girl, boy likes girl. Hi-jinx occur. The first four issues of the comic are out now. I'm not totally in love with the book, mainly because I feel like I could have been LDB before I got married. The story hit really close to home. Going to parties with her but not fitting in with her friends. Trying to be cool, but feeling like a fool the entire time. The story has so much love and depth in it. This isn't a comic that someone made up. This is someone's heart and soul. I'm not sure if the author meant to do that or if he's telling the story from his own experiences, because it feel like it. I think this is one of the best personal stories out there for comics. If you ever want to read comics, but not superheros or large space battles, but a personal story this is an amazing story for that. Plus I drew a little comic for it. Check it out!

update on the life and times of michael mclean
Life has been full of craziness lately. Well mostly just working tons of hours and sleeping very little. On the plus side Allison and I have finally started jogging. That took a lot longer to get started then I thought it would. We found a great running program on Cool Runnings, I know like the movie. So it's this program for couch potatoes like me to train to run a 5k in nine weeks. Day one down. So hopefully in nine weeks I'll be able to run a 5k. My legs are totally sore but it's only the first day.
On a plus side I've been running my webcomic for seventeen posts! I know it's pretty cool to think that the I've got seventeen posts up for my comic up. Ed the Business Warrior comic is going strong with a ton of comics still to go. The comic is strong and awesome.
Life is good. Today is my eighth months anniversary with Allison too. I know not a huge anniversary, but still important to me. It's awesome to think that I've been married for eight months. Life is excellent. Even with long hours at work, life is good because my wife is excellent.

loving from the past
I hate when ads get you. I watch a lot of Hulu and the past several months they have been giving me one ad more than others. It's Sun Chips. They keep saying that they are made from the sun, which makes me really want them. They also make me think about Superman. Superman is powered by the sun and if Sun Chips are from the sun than if he eats Sun Chips he'll be super charged. Kind of like in All- Star Superman when he got supercharged by flying into the sun. Sun Chips what a crazy idea. So I haven't eaten Sun Chips since I was a teenager. I remember back then that my friends told me Sun Chips would cause bad things to my digestive system. Total lies but it was a good reason to stop eating them. Since I don't eat a lot of chips anyway it was no big deal until Hulu messed with my head. So now I've been obsessed about Sun Chips, Allison can totally back me up here. She's seen me buy two big bags and eat them every time I go to Subway or Blimpies. What I'm trying to say is that advertising works on me. I've always known it worked on me. I've told people that I love good TV ads. The nation wide ads not local. I don't remember a single good local ad. Sun Chips you've got me hooked again. All to your made by the sun ad campaign. I bow to your superior knowledge.

good at something normal
Another week is gone. Time just flies by now. I can't believe the weekend is almost over too. I've never had this problem before. I remember weekends going on for ever and now they're so short. This week was an interesting one. I started volunteering at the Garden City Library. The one where Allison works. I never see my wife so I decide that I needed to do something about that and this seemed like a great way to do it. She's at work and I get to help her library out. It's not hard work by any means, it's just shelfing books and movies. It reminds me of working for the budget office. There I sort contracts and other documents. My life has been a long career of sorting. I'm really good at it. It's really weird to think you're good at something that really shouldn't be that hard for anyone to do. I've always loved sorting too. It started with my comic collection. I love sorting my comics as a kid. I would take my small collection and resort it all the time. Like in High Fidelity (the movie) I would change my approach to how I sorted my collection, but how I acquired my collection though. It's usually alphabetical by comic name, but now I do it more by character than title of comic. So Amazing Spider-Man is in the S's for Spider-Man. It's a little odd, but perfect for me. Wow this story is just going everywhere today. This week I helped at Allison's library and it was fun. I got to hang with her, maybe not talk, but be around my beautiful bride. I can't ask for more than that. I love just being with her.
On a side note don't forget about ED the Business Warrior. A new comic will come out on Tuesday, but Sunday will have the first special sauce. So go check out some awesome special sauce at http://minidovecomics.wordpress.com.

an invincible wednesday
I love Wednesdays. I have loved Wednesdays for a very long time. When I was on my mission, Wednesday was my preparation day or p-day. It was the only day we were allowed to do things for ourselves. Most of the time it meant letting your companion do something you might not really enjoy. like go play basketball for three of the six precious hours you got. It may have not been the best time, but at least you weren't wearing a suit. Which is sad to think, because I love suits. My love of Wednesdays goes much further than the p-day. Before my mission and a little bit during my mission Wednesdays meant comic book day. I love comic books. They are what I love to read the most. Wednesday is always a good day if I can make it to the comic shop. Well today I made it to the comic shop. Two amazing titles were there, Invincible by Robert Kirkman and Invincible Iron Man by Matt Fraction. By far the best two comics on the market in my opinion. Getting both in one day is like watching a bull in a china shop. That would be amazing to watch all that china be destroyed. I would have to say both comics surpass what I was excepting today. Iron Man was amazing. It had the 3.99 price tag, but it was worth it. It might have been a double size comic, it sure felt like it, so pretty much you were getting way more than usually for what some comics cost normally. That's not even the best part. The best part is they are finally starting the reboot. I know they had one only 25 issues ago when Fraction started his run, but it's totally worth it. The new suit, the mind wipe finally being over, plus no more running from Osborn. That was like fifteen issues or something. It was good, but long. Now we're back to Tony Stark being Iron Man and just in time for movie number two. This comic is a great starting point if you've never read Iron Man before too. Which would almost be me. I've only read Fraction's run and Warren Ellis' run on Iron Man. So maybe 40 comics? I've read more Flash in the past year than I've ever read Iron Man. I always disliked Iron Man, mainly because one of my elementary school buddies thought he was the best superhero ever. I always felt Spiderman was, that was until I started reading Invincible, which came out today too. Invincible just had it's reboot of sorts, not really a reboot, but more an easy jumping on comic for new readers last month with Invincible Special 1 and today Invincible 71 come out. Both were amazing comics, probably the best comic on the market. No it is the best comic you buy. There's my plug for Invincible by Robert Kirkman. Buy it or be an idiot, because if you are not reading it you are an idiot. (Sorry honey, but it's true) So today is the best day ever as my wife would say.

year of the flash

I have decide this to be the year of the Flash. Why you might ask? Well that is a good question. The main reason is he is cool. The Scarlett Speedster is fast and has a great line up of villains. To learn about the Flash I have been reading Flash comics from the library and also listening to Tom vs the Flash which is a great podcast. Tom pretty much reads a golden age issue of the flash every pod cast. It's nice because now I can have my comics at work and at home. Although being read a comic is a little different than actually reading it. Still it's pretty cool. The new Flash series begins soon with Barry Allen as the Flash. Plus you get a free flash ring when you buy the first issue. I'm so there. Flash out.

m is for imagination
Life has so many turns in it. I never know when I'll be out lefts and only have rights left. I figure some day I'll lose my crazy imagination. It's one of the few things I that I have that is excellent. I can be lost in my mind having adventures for hours. I've done this since I was a little kid and I think that most people don't do this anymore, I could be wrong. If I am let me know. Well I want to keep this imagination as long as I can. I've decide to start exercising it. I've been doing this by forcing myself to draw a comic a day. I don't always get one made, but I've been trying. Yesterday was one of those days I didn't finish a comic, but I made a minute stop-motion movie, so I think that was more than enough exercise for my imagination. I've drawn some really cool monster comics, so I figured I'd post them. Plus I'm going to post the movie too. Hope you enjoi.

the first one is always free
Many people know I love comic books. This is no surprise to anyone, but lately Vertigo an imprint of DC Comics has started a new selling system. Vertigo is now selling their first issues of new series for only 99 cents. This might not sound like a cheap price since comic use to be 20 cents, but as long as I’ve read comics they have been 99 cents. Right now a normal comic sells for 2.99 or 3.99. Then special issues sell for about 5 or 6 bucks; 99 cents is cheap in today’s comic world. Well being a junkie for comics I can’t turn down a 99 cent comic. It’s so cheap and sometimes you can even get those even cheaper when they are discounted. Reading comics is like getting a junkie fix and when they give you the first one almost free you want more. Like last week Grant Morrison had a new comic through Vertigo called Joe the Barbarian. Normally I wouldn’t pick it because I don’t read Vertigo comics by the issue, but it was a buck. I also enjoy reading Grant Morrison; he’s one crazy comic writer. I also normally read Vertigo comics by the trade. Vertigo knows how to get me. This isn’t the first time they’ve done it either. The last one was Sweet Tooth. That’s one sweet comic. I read the first three issues before I had to stop. Vertigo has some really good series and they are marketing to the comic book nerds really well. I should know I’m a comic nerd. On top of the cheap first issue they also do a cheap first trade of the comics. The first trades are usually ten bucks instead of 15. They discount those trades to try a get a comic nerd hook a second time. It’s almost like they are selling crack. I see them and I must have it. I need my comic fix. I will be the first to admit, I’m a comic junkie. I’m a junkie all the way. Before I got married if I had to choose between buying food and buying comics; comics always won. Sadly that is no longer the case. I have to live in a very tight comic budget that doesn’t allow for many comics. My love prefers to have food in the fridge compared to comics in my hands. She might be right, but only time will tell.

spidey saturday
Today has been a good day so far. I had two things on my agenda to do and they are already done. One was write a talk for Sunday and I got that one finished by 10:30 this morning. The second was to finish coloring my ED the Business warrior comic for my Zuda submission. Finished that around two today. I'm feeling really good about my accomplishments for this Saturday. I did not waste it like most Saturdays. I also colored a promo for ED the Business Warrior and colored an older spider-man I drew. All and all it's been an excellent day. So for your enjoyment here is my colored spider-man. I hope everyone has a great weekend.

comic update
So I’m moving right along with the development of my Ed comic for my submission to Zuda. I have drawn five strips and colored four of them. I did this all last week and took the weekend off. Tonight I hope to illustrate the sixth comic of the eight comic that I need to submit. The only problem is I have run into a little writers block. I drew the first five strips in less than seventy-two hours. Which is amazing for me, cause they are not small one panel comics like I normally do. Then I finally came up with the sixth comic idea last night around one thirty in the morning, because everyone knows I can’t sleep at night. I have too many owl qualities to sleep at night. Like I like to stay up and eat when it’s dark. Awesome owl ability I must say. I was going to draw it before I went to work today, but I had too many little chores and goofing off things to do before I got around to it. Oh not having school and three jobs might be hazardous to my getting things done. Can I really complain though? I love drawing and making these comics. Plus if I do get selected it’s only one a week, not five like I did last week. I can handle one a week a lot easier than five or more. How do those guys do those newspaper guys do it? Wait, most of them aren’t that great. You only have a few amazing strips in the newspaper right now. Well I’m off to my day job.

webcomic
I’ve decide it is time for me to make an official webcomic. I’m thinking that I will modify my Ed the Business warrior comic to do this. I just don’t know how much people like or dislike Ed comic. I’ve put many up on flickr and I’ve been putting new color copies of Ed comics on my blog. The question is whether I should do it or not. I’m planning on submitting them to Zuda comics which is part of DC comics. They use competitions to see which webcomics they plan to pick up. The problem with that is I’ve looked at who wins and who hasn’t over the last couple of years. The types that win are not the type of comics I draw or read. They do have the type of comics that draw in the competition, but they never come in first. The closest one I’ve seen is second and that was by Wes Molebash and he does amazing webcomics. I’ve been reading his different comics he rights for years now. If he can’t win with an awesome cat comic, how am I going to win with a silly business comic? Although my Ed comic has been featured on other people’s blogs before. It’s been about four since that happened, but I might be able to capture my raw Ed power again or I might just be crazy. Okay so I’m asking all of you if you think that I have the talent to do this competition. I would need your support and willingness to actually go to www.zuda.com and make a profile so you can vote for my comic. If I win, I could do this as a part time job, which would be the most amazing thing ever. So let me know.

Ed conversations 3

Really who hasn't had that dream. The raining down of sprinkles. Opening your mouth to eat as many as you can. That the kind of world I want to live in. That's the kind.

ed conversations 1
Ed is no longer just a black and white comic! He's got color now. This is the first in a series of different one panel comics I'm doing for Ed and the business warriors. I should also have rabbit comics up at some point. enjoi!

comic junkie
I love comics and I can’t get enough of them. I don’t just like the spandex heroes jumping building from building either. I really enjoy independent comics, which I know can be superheroes, but at the same time a lot of them are not. I have been reading this one webcomic by Jon Adams called Truth Serum. This comic is a satire on world viewed through really bad heroes. These heroes never do really any good, which makes it even funnier. I was first exposed to Truth Serum when I bought one of the graphic novels about three years ago. This graphic novel was written before the web comic came out. Then recently I bought a new graphic novel. This one took the events of Bush presidency and showed how some of ideas were not the best. Comics are the best. They can look at anything and make statements about them that other might not be able to make. For one most people don’t care about comics, so they get away with a lot of things these days, since they got freedom of speech again. They just got that back in the late nineties. The major two at least did, the small companies never bowed down to the illegal sanctions of the government. I go off in so many tangents it’s not funny. I’m just an odd ball at times. One comic I read this year that was amazing is Satchel Paige Striking out Jim Crow. This comic is a view of how Satchel Paige was able to play baseball with white people viewed through the eyes of another player was forced into retirement from an injury. Of all the comics I’ve read this year, I would say this is the best. It’s a true story about a great man that many people might not know. Plus who doesn’t love a baseball comic? They don’t make many of them.
Comics are a medium that are not explored enough in the US. They can be so many different things. They don’t just have to be about superheroes fighting supervillains. They can be educational tools. If I wanted to teach someone something I would think that comics could have a powerful source to do that. In other countries comics are more than just entertainment. In Japan they have history comics. One of them that I read about was a comic about the invention of noodles in a cup. A small thing I know, but who would want to read about it when you have comic that talks about it. All I am saying is that comics need to be embraced more. I might not be the best source for this, being a comic junkie myself. It’s like asking a crack addict if crack is good for them. I would say my comic addiction is as bad being a crack addict, just ask my parents or wife. I have so many comics and spent thousands of dollars on them. I still wouldn’t want them to give them up. Comics are the best. I made my points, go read comics.
